Why study History?

History teaches you to:
• Understand the world around us
• Understand how and why humans behaved as they did
• Use information effectively
• Be analytical and critical of the evidence presented to you
• Learn the arts of debate and expressing a clear personal point of view

History at Key Stage 3

During Key Stage 3, students learn how to analyse sources of evidence from the past. Students are expected to find information and make inferences from sources; and discuss the uses and limitations of different historical sources. Students learn how to explain why things happen; explain change and continuity over time; and discuss different interpretations of and the significance of different Historical events.

Year 7
Students study the changing fortunes of the Roman Empire; from Rome’s early days as a Republic through to the collapse of the once great Empire. Additionally, students examine life in Medieval Britain; including the Crusades; the power of the Church and the murder of Thomas Becket; storming a castle; the horrific Black Death; and the Peasants’ Revolt.

Year 8
Students study Britain 1500-1750 including; the roller coaster of religious change seen in this period; the reigns’ of Henry VIII, Bloody Mary and Elizabeth I; the turbulent years of the English Civil War; and finally Cromwell, hero or villain? In the summer terms students learn about the Black People’s of the Americas including; the slave trade; the journey of the slaves on the Middle Passage; the reality of life for slaves on the plantations; the abolition of the slave trade; and finally the fight for Civil Rights.

Year 9
Students study the great changes in Britain from 1750 to 1900 including; the Empire; political change; living conditions in 19th century Britain; and the technological progress made in this period. In the summer terms students examine the significant events of the 20th century including; the Great War; the rise of Hitler and the Second World War.

Trips
Students have the opportunity to visit Corfe Castle in year 7. Whilst in year 9 students visit the Imperial War Museum in London. Additionally, depending on student numbers, a trip to the Battlefields of World War One may run in year 9.

History at Key Stage 4

In History you will learn to:
• Use information effectively
• Be analytical and critical when considering evidence
• Understand how and why humans behaved as they did
- and may behave in similar circumstances again.
• Learn the arts of oral debate and expressing a clear personal point of view

Examination Board: AQA Course Length: 2 years

Course Content:
Over the course of two years students study and sit 2 exams on:
• The History of Medicine and Public Health Through Time, worth 37.5% of the GCSE
• Germany 1919-1945, worth 37.5% of the GCSE
Students will be tested on their ability to analyse and interpret evidence; explain events, people and changes over time.
Overall Examination: 75%

Assessment: Coursework
Students complete 2 pieces of coursework:
1. The Development of Corfe Castle over Time, worth 12.5% of the GCSE
2. The Struggle for Peace in Northern Ireland, worth 12.5% of the GCSE

Overall Coursework: 25%

Tiers of entry: In History there is only one tier of entry. All students sit a differentiated exam paper that is accessible to all students.

Trips:
Students will have the opportunity to visit Corfe Castle as part of their coursework study. Students may also visit the Science Museum in London to support their study on the History of Medicine and Public Health Through Time.
