WHAT IS ICT?

ICT stands for "Information and Communications Technology":- Using digital technology to help individuals, students, businesses and organisations use information. It is not easy to find a definition of ICT that is universally accepted as the applications and technology involved are constantly changing. This can make things difficult, but it also makes ICT an exciting subject to study. The use of ICT has grown at an extremely fast rate over the past decade, and in schools, ICT has become an integral part of every pupil’s educational experience. So what does it mean for us at Castledown School? As the C in ICT stands for Communication of data by electronic means we aim to give pupils the opportunity to explore and gain a understanding of a range of technologies such as: Personal Computers, Digital video, Mobile Phones, and Digital radio.

ICT at Castledown School

The aim of our ICT courses is to equip pupils with the skills necessary to be independent users of digital technologies, capable of making decisions as to when to use and when not to use ICT.  Pupils are encouraged to think about how they can apply their knowledge and understanding of ICT across the whole curriculum. Our courses at both KS3 and 4 are constantly developing to take account of technical advances.  Courses enable pupils to develop their skills in the use of standard office applications (word processing, spreadsheets, and databases), and pupils are increasingly having the opportunity to explore other areas such as web design, computer graphics, desktop publishing, animation, sound, and image editing.

In year 7 and 8 pupils receive one ICT lesson each week, at year 9 this rises to 3 lessons a fortnight.  At KS4 pupils follow either a Dida course or the new iTQ qualification and receive 4 or 5 lessons a fortnight depending on which course they take.
