Cultural Studies Cultural Studies taught at Castledown School is as its name implies a broad approach to the study of religion and its impact, importance and links with culture and society. It is taught to all year groups 7-11 at Key Stages 3 and 4. Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9): In Year 7 students are introduced to the subject and consider during Term 1 themes such as: ‘Facts, Opinions and Beliefs’ and ‘Learning from Experience’. During terms 2-6 students study both the Cultural and Religious aspects of two major world religions: Judaism and Sikhism. Homework assignments and regular assessments are given throughout the year. In Year 8 during Cultural Studies, students again consider two major world religions being: Christianity and Hinduism; again Cultural and Religious aspects are studied. Homework and regular assessment tasks are given throughout Year 8. In Year 9 students consider a further two major world religions: Buddhism and Islam during terms 1-5. In term 6 students consider topics such as: ‘Suffering’ and ‘Near death experiences’, this terms work forms a basis for the GCSE Course students follow in Years 10-11. Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11) The GCSE Cultural Studies (R.E) short course taught at Castledown School is worth half a GCSE qualification. Students study five modules over two years. There is no coursework component involved. Students are examined via a two hour exam sat at the end of Year 11. The GCSE Course involves students in examining the culture and religion of Christian and Islamic society in comparative terms. Three modules are studied in Year 10:‘Marriage and the family’‘Social harmony’‘Matters of life and death’. In Year 11 students examine the final two modules of the course:‘Religion and the media’‘Believing in God’. Regular homework and assessment tasks are given throughout the course, with an emphasis upon examination technique and preparation during Year 11.
