The Business Studies course at Castledown school is a double award. Students who take this qualification will receive the equivalent of 2 GCSE grades. It is taught as a double option and students study the following 3 modules:

1)     Investigating Business. This first module looks at how businesses are run and structured. A major focus is on business type and students are encouraged to research the differences between partnerships, limited companies and franchises. In addition to this students will learn about some of the legislation that business must adhere to and the rights and responsibilities of employees.

2)     People In Business. In this module students look at job roles of those that work in a variety of businesses. They find out about customer service and stakeholders in a business and how the actions of a business can have an impact on a variety of people who may not always have direct links with a particular company.

3)     Finance. This unit helps students to understand how a finance department within a business operates. They find out about financial documents, breakeven analysis and learn how to produce profit and loss statements and balance sheets. In their exam they are also required to give advice regarding the most appropriate sources of finance for business projects. The course is assessed using a mix of formal examinations and coursework. The coursework element accounts for 66% of the marks and the remainder is assessed in the Finance exam. The formal examination is sat in January of Year 11 and the two coursework assignments are submitted in the following April.
